Jazz 1976 Max Roach Quartet. The album contains part of a concert by the Max Roach Quartet held on 24 March 1976 at the Salone Rinascita in Sesto Fiorentino (Florence, Italy) and organized by Arci Musica to replace the one originally planned in Florence at the Circolo SMS Andrea del Sarto which jumped due to delay of the plane flight that brought the musician to Italy!
The group that performed that evening and that did other various dates in Europe and other countries in subsequent years was composed of the following musicians. Billy Harper on tenor sax, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Reggie Workman on double bass and Max Roach on drums. A respectable quartet that that evening gave rise to a great avant-garde jazz show very appreciated by the audience.
The Audio Recording
The tape recording comes to us from a private collection. It is a “bootleg recording” taken from the audience and made with a Philips cassette recorder with external microphone and then transported on a reel. The magnetic support has deteriorated over time and at the time of digitization it was not possible to recover the entire duration of the concert. We had to limit ourselves to about 1 hour and 30 ‘of restored audio. By doing so, a satisfactory reproduction was obtained even if the sacrificed parts concern solos by Reggie Workman and Max Roach (also present in the restored pieces) and some choral parts. However, what you hear, well testifies to the verve, energy and skill of the musicians as demonstrated also by the applause of the audience.
